gout This MISSES in project is a menopg1 11905 SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2005 I THE MADISON COUNTY HERALD I 5A Faith Values HANDS helping support victims of hurricane By Becky Hathcock Special to The Herald HANDS distribution center in Ridgeland could use a few helping hands this season. The center offers a number of ways to help those hit by Hurricane Katrina, and its latest effort can be aided by simply dialing a phone. For Thanksgiving, the center is organizing a feast to be served on the Coast. Local residents can call and order a turkey to be cooked by Chimneyville Smokehouse. Turkeys will be delivered by the center's volunteers, said the organization's founder Alicia Pickering, a Madison County resident.

HANDS, or Helping Americans Needing Disaster Support, began the day after the hurricane hit when a friend of Pickering's called to see if she was OK and if there was anything needed. "I was like everyone else, watching the early video," said Pickering. "I was overwhelmed and heartbroken, and all I could think to tell her was 'Water, they need Pickering's friend, a congressman's wife from Alabama, made arrangements to fill an 18-wheeler with bottled water and it was on its way within six hours, she said of the group's humble beginnings. Word of mouth spread quickly across the nation, and the group that began with two friends and a truck of water grew quickly into a fully operational disaster relief distribution center with more than 500 volunteers sending out 30 trucks a day. Initially the group was housed in Christ United Methodist Church, then the former Winn-Dixie store on Old Canton Road in Jackson and now in the former Stuart C.

Irby building in Ridgeland. "Organizing supplies and delivery to those in need on the Coast has been an ongoing evolving process," said Cindy Cheeks, who began volunteering when the group was at Christ United Methodist Church and has transitioned into an administrative coordinator of clothes, food and relief supplies when the volunteer group turned into a full time nonprofit organization. Each week the needs change, and Pickering, a board of directors and hundreds of volunteers are hard at work, continuing to meet long term on-going needs of hurricane victims. "Initially our efforts were to supply local shelters," said Cheeks. "But people involved saw a need for ongoing long-term relief efforts.

Because what we were doing was so successful, a nonprofit agency was established." The group coordinates with companies and organizations Will Herald Turkey and ham will be on the menu for Hurricane Katrina victims, thanks to the HANDS Distribution Center, now located at the Stuart C. Irby building in Ridgeland. To purchase a turkey for the Coast, call (601) 354- 4665. The cost is $25 and can be placed on credit or debit cards. Steven Pickett (left), Leisha Pickering and Jimmy Morton are teaming up with HANDS Distribution Center this holiday season to make sure Hurricane Katrina victims have a meal for Thanksgiving. Through HANDS, people can order a turkey cooked by Chimmneyville Smokehouse and have it delivered to the Gulf Coast. across the nation looking for somewhere to donated, she said.

Or if people on the Coast call in with needs, volunteers look for places to supply the needs. "We try to identify needs of people on the Coast and find people who can meet those needs whether it is work teams, food or clothing." The group's current emphasis is focused on working with schools on the Coast to provide students and teachers with new clothing and school supplies. Putting together a Thanksgiving feast for residents was Pickering's latest brainchild, but she said it will take the efforts of hundreds of volunteers to pull off such a banquet. "This is going to be something special," she said. With the help of more than 150 volunteers, as many as 1,000 Waveland residents will be treated to turkey and all the trimmings at tables and chairs underneath a tent at St.

Clare's Catholic School. Volunteers will spend the day serving students and their families who lost everything, said Pickering. Several teams are staying on through Saturday to help with clean up and rebuilding efforts, she said. To purchase a turkey, call Chimneyville at (601) 354-4665. Cost of a turkey is $25 and can be charged to debit or credit cards.

Once Thanksgiving is over, there are opportunities available at the warehouse to help with the clothing drive. A community-wide food drive will be held at local grocery stores, where people can easily buy and donate food to be sent to the Coast, Cheeks said.
