The Clinton News I Thursday, October 12, 2000 Obituaries Herman 'Pot' Gaines Herman "Pot" Gaines of Clinton, 93, an Army veteran of World War II, died of respiratory arrestSept. 29 at G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jackson. Services were at Forest Grove Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mr.

Gaines was: a member of Poplar Hill African Methodist Episcopal Church. He was the widower of Thelma PrimousGaines. Survivors include: son, Herman B. Gaines of Clinton; and two grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Bobby C.

McMurtrey Bobby C. McMurtrey of Jackson, 57, an insurance representative, died of cancer Sept. 30 at home. Memorial services were at the family home on Maddox Road with military honors. Mark Seepe Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Mr. McMurtrey was a native of Bruce. He was a graduate of Shannon High who served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He was also a broker and gaming dealer at Harrah's Casino in Vicksburg. He was Baptist.

Survivors include: daughter, Christy L. Tucker of Jackson; sister, Melinda Turner of Terry and Reba Ann Bonds of Clinton; and brother, Johnny P. McMurtrey of Terry. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Mississippi Division, 1380 Livingston Lane, Jackson, Miss. 39212.

Elorose Byrne Elorose Byrne of Clinton, 84, a retired employee of Rives Leavell died of heart failure Oct. 3 at Briar Hill Nursing Home. Services were at Wright Ferguson I Funeral Home with burial in Clinton Cemetery. Mrs. Byrne was a native of Greenville and a longtime resident of Clinton.

She was a member of Clinton United Methodist Church. She 1 had worked 30 years at Rives Leavell formerly Church Building Saving. Survivors include: daughters, Joan Harrison of Olive Branch and Sherry White of Florence; and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. J. Keith Daniels J.

Keith Daniels of Poplarville, 51, head football coach and athletic director for Pearl River Community College, died of a brain hemorrhage Oct. 2 at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. Services were at the Marvin R. White Coliseum on the Pearl River Community College campus and at New Zion Baptist in Monticello with burial in the church cemetery. Wilson Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Mr. Daniels was a native of Natchez. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Poplarville. Survivors include: wife, Charlotte; daughter, Olivia "Sunny" Daniels of Poplarville; mother, Vermell Daniels of Monticello; and sister, Nell Johnson of Clinton. Memorials may be made to the Pearl River Community College Development Foundation with a designation for the football pro- gram.

Aubrey M. Brumfield Aubrey Manor Brumfield of Clinton, 94, a retired bookkeeper and cattle farmer, died of heart failure Oct. 4 at Hospice Ministries. Services were Oct. 6 at Stricklin-King Funeral Home with burial in Dover Cemetery in Yazoo County.

Mr. Brumfield was a resident of Bentonia, where he was a lifelong resident of the Concord Baptist Church community. He was a member of Pocahontas Baptist Church, where he served as clerk and member of the board of deacons. He was on the board of trustees at Anding High. He was the widower of Erline O.

Michael Cole Champion Michael Cole "Mike" Champion of Waterford, 51, a supervisor at Whirlpool Corporation, died of heart failure Oct. 3 at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Services were at Waller Funeral Home with burial in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Champion was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include: wife, Carolyn; daughters, Michelle Champion of Collierville and Christy Champion of Oxford; sons, Michael Champion II of Oxford, Brad Allen of Memphis and Cody Culver of Waterford; sisters, Nancy Landrum of Picayune, Emily Noss of Clinton and Jackie Champion of Charleston; brother, Elvis Champion Jr. of Water Valley; and one grandchild. Maydene F. Smithhart Maydene Fuller Smithhart of Clinton, 67, a retired nurse, died of cancer Oct. 3 at Whispering Pines Hospice in Ridgeland.

Services were Oct. 6 at Lakewood Memorial Funeral Home with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park. Mrs. Smithhart was a native of Yazoo County. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include: daughters, Cathy Webb of Brandon and Sandra Whitlock of Clinton; brothers, Henry E. Gray and Richard R. Gray, both of Pearl, Neal Gray of Raymond, Earl Gray of Key West, Gerrard Gray of Byram and Johnny Gray of Vicksburg; sisters, Marie Kelly and Elaine Fuller, both of Yazoo City, Naomie Crowell of Nash, Texas, Joy Parker and Pauline Pickel, both of Vicksburg, and Margaret Biggs of Fort Smith, and five grandchildren. McNamee of Clinton, 21, an assistant pension analyst, died of a self-inflicted shooting Oct. 4 at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Services were Oct. 7 at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl with burial in Mountain Creek Cemetery in Florence. Mrs.

McNamee was a lifelong resident of Harrisville. She was a 1997 graduate of Union Academy in Georgetown, where she was valedictorian. She attended Hinds Community College and the University of South Alabama. She was a former deputy sheriff with Hinds County. She was employed with Security Ballew.

She was a member of Mount Creek Baptist Church, where she taught preschool Sunday school. Survivors include: husband, James; stepdaughter, Katie McNamee of Starkville; brother, David J. Dear of Harrisville; parents, Jeral and Eva North Dear of Harrisville; and maternal grandparents, George and Melba North of Clinton. Memorials may be made to Mountain Creek Baptist Church, P.O. 39073. George C. Pirie Jr. George Charles Pirie Jr. of a retired lieutenant colonel, died of heart failure Oct.

4 at Ocean Springs Hospital. Services were at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Clinton with burial in Flora City Cemetery. Survivors include: wife, Elizabeth; son, William Pirie of Clinton; daughters, Elizabeth Quin of Germany and Barbara Hernadez of Sachse, Texas; brother Donald Pirie of Salsbury, and five grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Roy Wilson Roy Wilson of Crystal Springs, 67, CEO of Wilson Trucking died of heart failure Oct. 3 at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.

Century Funeral Home handled arrangements. Mr. Wilson was a native of Crystal Springs and a member of Free People M.B. Church. He was the first black supervisor of Copiah County and a community leader.

He was a member of the board of trustees of Hardy Wilson Memorial Hospital in Hazlehurst. Survivors include: daughters, Sandra Robinson, Julia Thomas and Sindey Brown, all of Crystal Springs, and Betty Thompson of Madison; sons, Roy Wilson Kenneth Wilson and Don Wilson, all of Crystal Springs; brothers, Morris Wilson Jr. and Robert Wilson, both of Crystal Springs; sisters, Maggie Flowers of Jackson and Rebecca Pickering of Clinton; and 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Marie Roberts Martin Marie Roberts Martin of Grenada, 77, a homemaker, died of heart failure Oct. 5 at Grenada Lake Medical Center.

Services were at Wayside Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Martin was a member and church clerk of Wayside Baptist Church. Survivors include: husband, John; daughter, Debra Kilpatrick of Clinton; son, John H. Martin Jr.

of Vicksburg; sisters, Wilma R. Clark and Catherine R. Pruett, both of Grenada; brother, James Roberts of Greenwood; and two grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Memorials may be made to Wayside Baptist Church. Cleo P.

Coggin Cleo P. Coggin of Tupelo, 92, a retired teacher, died of heart failure Oct. 5 at Cedars Health Center. Services were Oct. 6 at the First Methodist Church in Nettleton with burial in Mullins Cemetery.

W.E. Pegues Funeral Home handled arrangements. Mrs. Coggin was a native of the Toccopola community in Pontotoc County who had lived in Nettleton most of her life. She was a graduate of the University of Mississippi.

Survivors include: son, Richard Coggin of Booneville; brothers, W. Pickens of Pontotoc, Curry Pickens of Clinton and Kenneth Pickens of Toccopola; sisters, Doris Thomas of Pontotoc and Gladys French of Clinton; and three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Maggie Lou Sweeney Maggie Lou Sweeney of Pearl, 72, a homemaker, died of complications of brain surgery Oct.

7 at St. Jackson Memorial Hospital. Services were Oct. 9 at Skyway Hills Church of Christ with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park in Jackson. Mrs.

Sweeney was a native of Itta Bena who grew up in Lake. She lived in Hattiesburg and Jackson before moving to Pearl in 1996. While living in Hattiesburg, she and her husband owned Alexander Materials 7. She was a member of Skyway Hills Church of Christ. She was the widow of Lee Phelps Sweeney Jr.

Survivors include: sons, Jeffery Phelps of Clinton and Stephen Sweeney of Seminary; daughter, Rebecca McClung of San Antonio; brother, Frank White of Natchez; sister, Joyce Dennis of Pearl; and five grandchildren. Taylor Dorothy Y. Taylor of Jackson, 81, a retired social worker, died of a stroke Oct. 8 at Central Mississippi Medical Center. Services were Oct. 10 at Wright Ferguson Funeral Home with burial in Cedarlawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Taylor was a native of Moorhead. She taught school for several years. She worked at Camp Shelby during World War II and later at the state Welfare Department. She was a member of St.

Luke United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Stephen Taylor. Survivors include: daughter, Anna Lee Taylor of Clinton; sister, Sarah Calhoun of Florida; and nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 621 Duling Jackson, Miss.
