I THE CLINTON NEWS I THURSDAY, MAY 9, 2002 Obituaries Robert E. McLendon Robert E. McLendon Sr. of Jackson, 69, a brick mason, died of heart failure April 25 at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. Services were at Parkview Church of Christ on Clinton Blvd.

with burial in Garden Memorial. Lakeover Funeral Home handled arrangements. Mr. McLendon was born in Shubuta on March 7, 1933. He was the fourth of seven children born to the late Martin McLendon Sr.

and Ida Brown McLendon. He confessed Christ. He baptized and was added to the Church of Christ on June 16, 1985. He was a faithful member of Parkview Church of Christ before his illness. Brother Robert E.

McLendon Sr. was joined in holy matrimony to the former Betty Mae Graves on Jan. 24, 1958. Five children were born to this blessed union. His formal education included attendance at Alcorn State College and Jackson State College.

He was a master craftsman of masonry work. Brother McLendon was known for never meeting a stranger. He had a wonderful sense of humor and great character. He always gave the benefit of the doubt to a person, no matter if he knew them or not. He loved to sing (loudly).

He was generous with his time and money to family, friends and employees. He was an astute observer of character. You could always go to him for advice. He had great common sense. He was a concerned parent and grandparent.

He had an excellent work ethic. Everyone whomever he worked with or met enjoyed his company. He will be greatly missed. Robert departed this life (due to heart failure) on April 25, 2002, at 5:30 p.m. at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Hinds County.

His parents, Martin and Ida McLendon and one brother Martin McLendon Jr. preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Bettye McLendon of Jackson; children, Mary Lou DeBerry (Larry) of Biloxi, Helen Evans (James) of Canton, Robert E. McLendon Jr. of Jackson, Sharon Washington of Ridgeland, Onita McLendon and Juanita McLendon of Clinton; 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Willie Mae Nelson of Shubuta and Bertha Collins (Roy) of Cleveland, Ohio; three brothers, John McLendon (Edna) of Raymond, Charles McLendon (Bertha) and Lewis McLendon (Dessie) of Waynesboro; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

From the family thank you for all your prayers, cards, phone calls and support. Augusta Cox Searle Augusta Cox Searle of Jackson, 91, a homemaker, died April 30 at Rankin Medical Center. Graveside services were May a City Cemetery. Wright Ferguson Funeral Home handled arrangements. A native of Yazoo City, Mrs.

Searle had been residing at Clinton Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was a graduate of Hinds Agricultural High School and Hinds Community College. She was also a member of Flora Baptist Church where she had been active in her Sunday school class. Survivors include: son, Charles Robert Searle Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth of Fairview, N.C.; two grandchildren, C.R.

Searle Ill of Atlanta, and Patricia Dawn Cantrell of Cummings, and sister-in-law, Lyda R. Cox of Clinton. Myrtle S. Lemmons Myrtle S. Lemmons of Clinton, 93, died April 29 at her residence in Clinton.

Funeral services were May 4 at Lakewood Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park. Mrs. Lemmons was a native of Longview and a resident of Clinton. She is a member of Morrison Heights Baptist Church and a retired homemaker. Mrs.

She is survived by: daughters, Isadora Stevens of Columbus and Sarah Dell Sears of Clinton; sisters, Dell Franklin of Timpson, Texas, Nora Lemmons of Arlington, Texas, and Sarah Cotton of Saltillo; brother and sister-in-law, Murray and Pearl Scoggins of Starkville; daughter-in-laws, Louise Lemmons of Columbus and Eunice Lemmons of Starkville; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two area great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to your favorite charity. Edna Earl Little Edna Earl Little of Clinton, 82, died May 2 at Clinton Health and Rehabilitation Center. Services were May 4 at Wright Ferguson Funeral Home in Clinton with burial in Magnolia Cemetery in Meridian. Mrs. Little was a homemaker and a member of Morrison Heights Baptist Church.

She had been a resident of Clinton for 38 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles O. Little Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Tommy Langston; granddaughter and husband, Christie and Todd Cotten; and brother, Herman Heitman of Lake Villa, "Memorials may be made to the Baptist Children's Village, P.O. Box 21, Clinton, Miss. 39060. W.D. McAlpin W.D. McAlpin of Pearl, 77, died May 1 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.

Services were May 3 at the chapel of Baldwin-Lee in Pearl with burial in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. Mr. McAlpin resided in Pearl for 42 years. He was a member of First Bap- tist Church of Pearl, where he served as a Sunday school teacher. He was the first alderman of District 2, Pearl, and one of the founders of the Pearl Volunteer Fire Department.

He was a former Boy Scout master who loved to fish and hunt and was a true Pirate. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vernell Johnson McAlpin. Survivors include: his daughter, Theressia McAlpin of Pearl; son, Michael McAlpin and his wife, Janet of Clinton; sister, Joyce Robinson of Laurel; grandson, Josh McAlpin and his wife, Laura; granddaughter, Ashley McAlpin and her fiancee Johnathan Taylor. 20090-6766. Cleo S. Neighbors Cleo Stewart Neighbors of Clinton died May 1 at Manhattan Nursing Home. Services were May 4 at Lakewood Funeral Home on Clinton and graveside at Lakewood South on McCluer. Cleo Stewart Neighbors was born Feb.

15, 1910, at Tiger Town, Texas, to Iva Lee Sanders Stewart and Arthur Stewart. She and her husband moved from Paris, Texas, to Jackson in 1937. She moved to Clinton in 1997. and made the family special Mrs. Neighbors was an avid quilter She also enjoyed crocheting and sewing.

She loved her flowers, garden and yard work. She kept the family supplied in homemade blackberry jelly. She loved to have the family together at her home truly enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Pocahontas Baptist Church and previously a member of Wells Methodist Church for some 40 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, John Henry Neighbors, in 1978, and also a daughter, Iva Lou Norwood, who died in 1997.

She was preceded in death by identical twin sister, Theo Armstrong, brothers Clyde Taylor and Jake Taylor, and sisters Opal Wells, Jewel Smith, Ruby Taylor. "Bubber" Vandevere of Bentonia, 77, retired cattleman and farmer died of cancer May 2 at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.

Services were May 4 at StricklinKing Chapel with burial in Melrose Cemetery. The Rev. Wayne Long officiated. Mr. Vandevere was born Jan.

27, 1925, in Yazoo County. He was an Army veteran of World War II. His parents were John S. Vandevere and Dallas Thomas. Survivors include: spouse, Carolyn Vandevere, Bentonia; two daughters, Lori Peyton, Bentonia and Lisa Land, Clinton; two brothers, Clarence Vandevere, Benton and Robert G.

Vandevere, Easton, and four grandchildren, Bob Land, Ben Land, Tracy Peyton and Terry Peyton. Pallbearers were Dennis Vandevere, Jeff Vandevere, Phil Pope Timmy Vandevere, Rodney Davis and Jeff King. Memorials may be made to Yazoo Gideons chapter for Melrose Cemetery Fund. James O. 'Buster' Hill Sr.

James O. "Buster" Hill Sr. of Raymond ,78, died May 4 at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. Services were held May 6 at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home on Robinson Road in Jackson. Burial was in Byhalia.

A spiritual man, devoted to God, he touched the lives of many people during his time on earth. He loved his wife, his children, grandchildren and most recently his great-grandchild born last year. Born in rural Pike County on Dec. 16,1923, his family moved to Jackson when he was a child. He attended Central High School.

In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the U.S.S. Saratoga, where he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After the war he returned to Jackson and began working for the Mississippi Power and Light Co. as a lineman, eventually becoming a dispatcher for the company.

He retired in 1988. He was a member of the IBEW Local 605. He was a lifelong Baptist and a member of Salem Baptist Church of Learned. He was preceded in death by a son James "Bubba" Hill of Utica. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Hill of Raymond; daughters, Lynn Hill Howard of Byhalia and Aimee Oxley Staples of Baton Rouge, sons Buddy Oxley of Clinton and Kimothy Oxley of Raymond; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
