J. Agent. Figuring on Repair and Additions to Oar Ancient State House. The State" Ledger has been shown the plans and specifications for repairing and making additions to the capitol building, submitted to the committee by Mr. G.

W. Torgerson, of Meridian. The plans contemplate changes and improve ments that if consummated will re- juvenate the old State House and make a matter of pride to the whole people. As it now stands it is not only a dis grace to a great and prosperous commonwealth, but is liable to fall at any time. The walls on the southwest cor ner are sixteen inches out of plumb, and the building is cracked and broken from one end to the other.

Mr. Torgerson has made a scientific ex amination of the premises from cellar to dome, and says that no cement was em ployed when the foundation was laid, and in many places it has crumbled to dust. The roof joists are decayed, and the tin roofing looks like a strainer. To strengthen the whole structure it will be necessary to put in good drainage pipes and an entirely new foundation to tear down the southwest walls and re build them; to put on an entire new roof to build a wall of pressed brick directly in front of the present building, from one end to the other. The estimate includes large wings to be constructed at the north and south ends of the building, and various and sundry agreeable changes on the inside I of the present structure changes in the I stairway, the enlargement of the library and gallery of Representative hall, etc.

Making the building larger and longer will necessitate an increase in height, raising the cupola sixteen feet higher and other pleasing changes that will make the old death-trap a thing of beauty and joy for a long time to come; at a cost, Mr. Torgerson thinks, of about 000. This expenditure will make the old State I louse as good as new and save the tax-payers perhaps a half million the cost of a new one. It is understood the House committee is very favorably impressed with the idea that something )e done, and done at an early day. FOR MEN ONLY.

Joe Munday the "reformed actor," lectured to "men only" at the Opera House Sunday eveningahis subject being 'men that are possessed of the devil." A verv large crowd was in attendance and as highly delighted with what Mr. Munday had to sav, and the wav he said it. He gave a biographical sketch of his life and pictured his experience with red liquor like a man who had been all the interspersing his remarks with numerous anecdotes in a feeling and highly dramatic manner, bringing tears to the eyes of a number of strong men who perhaps had not thus been affected since they listened to the patter of the shingle as it was operated long ago by 2tUr am Mas in the historical back wood shetl. Mr. Munday has a Style that IS arly his own.

Whilst somewhat on the Sam Jones order, he has a much more powerful voice and strategic manner. He never indulges in wholesale abuse, but at the same time speaks his mind in plain terms, calling a spade a spade. He thinks whisky the special agent of the devil, but handles the bar-tenders with such soft gloves that they could not refuse to "chip in" to the contribution hat, which he jwisses around in a scientific manner. Mr. Munday has brought his family to Jackson, and is boarding at Mrs.

They express themselves pleased with the Capi tal city. The unusually large audience at the M-thodist church vesterdav. were ex travagant in their praise of the solo beautifully rendered by Miss Williams, of Alabama. Nearly $700 was distributed this morn- ining to the city officials, being salary for January for the city clerk, road commis- nnfi wihrn tmvo. oavs for what she gets.

Mr. James Conn died Sunday morning at the residence of Mr. J. W. Whittaker, near this city.

He was one of the oldest citizens of this vicinity and highly re spected by all who knew him. A small blaze in the roof of Mr. Thos. Atkinson's kitchen called out the fire de part ment morning, but the fire was extinguished before the engines got there and before anv damage had been done. Ok the intelligent audience assembled in Meridian Saturday night last to see the divine Sara it is stated that there were only six who knew when the play was ended, and the State Ledger is pleased to know they were from Jackson.

The balance iof the audience had to be dis persed by turning out the lights. The entertainment at Representative Hall to-morrow, Tuesday, night, will he highly interesting, and should be well patronized. 31iss Ida lavlor lias an en- viable reputation as an "elocutionist and is highlv spoken of by the press wherever Aw has appeared. Miss Taylor will be assisted bv some of the best local talent in Jackson. Fike was discovered in the Capital State Pank Saturday night by a colored man who happened to be passing up Capitol street.

He raised an alarm, the doors were forced open and the fire put out before it had done much damage to the desk on which it started. The origin cannot be accounted for, some laying it to rats and matches, others to the festive cigarette. HE WANTED A CHEW. District-Attorney Hudson Could Not Buy- Tobacco In Jackson on Sunday. The Jackson druggists do not propose to be caught again by the courts, and have entered into a combination not to sell even cigars anil tobacco on Sunday, and a little incident happened yesterday morning that tickled them immensely.

District-Attorney Hudson was in town, and about the time the Sunday school bells besran to rinsr. sauntered up to Tulgham's drug store, threw a ten cent bill down on the show case and asked for a piece of tobacco. Dr. Fulgham, rubbed his hands and with a 2x6 smile informed the district attorney that in view of the trouble he brought upon the druggists, they had all decided not to sell tobacco or cigars on Sunday. Mr.

Hudson was completely knocked out on this round, but the genial doctor knew how it was when a fellow wanted a chew of the weed and couldn't get it, and made the district-attorney accept a piece big enough to hist him till Monday morning. SAND-BAGGED AND ROBBED. A Toting Man Is "Held Fp' on the Street of Meridian, Last "Wednesday night Mr. Will Fer-gerson was waylaid and robbed on the principal street of Meridian. His assailants were two white men named Mike Shorter and John Manning, or at least that is the name they go under at Meridian.

They knocked Mr. Fergerson in the head with a sand-bag, bunged up both his eyes and choked him in to giving up $460 of hard cash, after which they lounced a departing train and started in this direction, stopping at several places along the route, and arriving in Jackson Saturday, jumping off the train near Enochs lumber yard. Chief of Police Lewis having been notified, was on the lookout for the men, and they were arrested on the streets yester day by officers Evans, Fuller and Cain and lodged in jail. Mr. Ferguson arrived in the city this morning, accompanied by detective John II.

Home, both of whom identified the two men under arrest as the parties who made the assault and stole the money, but not a dollar of it has been recovered.
